Based on his own screenplay, actor and director Sebastian Schipper outlines the story of a breathless night in the streets of the metropolis. This story is told in a single, uninterrupted take, condensed into a frenzied real-time event: lost in her own world, the young Spaniard Victoria dances through trendy Berlin nightclubs. In front of one club, she meets four guys who introduce themselves as Sonne, Boxer, Blinker and Fuss. They quickly start chatting. Sonne and Victoria are interested in one another and leave the group the first chance they get. But their tender flirtation is abruptly interrupted by Sonne’s mates. For them, the night is far from over. In order to settle an old debt, originating from the time when Boxer was in prison, they decide to attempt a heist on a private bank. Because one of them is too drunk, Victoria is to be their driver. The fun and games suddenly turn serious.

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, which takes place every year on the 10th of December, Goethe-Institut Kigali organizes a panel discussion about human rights and culture. Human Rights Day commemorates the day on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 which marked a milestone in the history of human rights. For the first time, it laid out fundamental human rights for all, to be universally protected. Today, 68 years later, the Declaration remains as relevant as ever, especially when it comes to maintaining customs and traditions. Traditions are often seen as the core of a country’s culture as they represent old customs, history and particularities of a society. Yet, traditional values are often deployed as an excuse to ignore and undermine human rights. During this discussion, opinions will be shared about how to preserve culture, traditions and customs that help to create a structure of distinctiveness and identity without violating human rights. It might be important to think about how to ensure basic needs as a platform for human rights and how the understanding of “traditional values” can contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights.
